the cover series
The Cover Series re-imagines abstract paintings by noted Modernists — Sophie Tauber-Arp, Agnes Martin, On Kawara, Bridget Riley, Josef Albers — into alternative non-painterly media: a silk-pleated Riley, a quilted Albers, an embroidered Lucio Fontana, a Mark Rothko tapestry.
A painting is fabric (canvas) covered with colour (paint). Textile is fabric but the colour is imbued, usually as a dye.
Why do these two media, materially so similar, enjoy varying degrees status and separate histories? What can textile do that a painting can’t, and vice versa?
