On&By Andy Warhol

Published in spring 2016 by MIT/Whitechapel Press, ON&BY Andy Warhol, edited by Gilda Williams, brings together 50 key texts by the artist (and his collaborators) and essential critics and commentators, from 1962 to today. Brief introductions to each text explain their place in Warhol’s critical history.

Dr Williams was Commissioning Editor for contemporary art at Phaidon Press during production of Andy Warhol’s Catalogue Raisonne, Painting and Sculpture, vol.s 1 and 2. Her Warhol research is devoted to re-interpreting the artist’s life’s work from frameworks beyond the ‘Pop’ label.

From 2005-2007 Williams pursued full-time research on Andy Warhol, and has conducted numerous first-hand interviews with former Factory members and Warhol scholars.

‘Gilda Williams has collected what seems like every word ever written about or uttered by the most influential artist of our time to produce a verbal collage portrait that is bold, revealing, multi-dimensional and original.

If Andy were alive, he would probably say,

‘Oh, wow. Why didn’t I think of that?’
